Clarence Sales loves basketball. However, the Puhi coach loves teaching youths how to play even more.
Sales, along with assistant coaches Vinda Carineo and Neil Fagarang, took Team Central to the Boys and Girls Club Summer Tourament on O‘ahu last weekend.
At the end of the three-day event, the 13-and-under squad returned home with a silver medal.
In the first game, Team Central dished B&G Gold, 32-22. Team Central continued to roll in the second contest with a 48-15 win, putting them in the semifinals, where they crushed the Honolulu Bulls, 58-6.
In the title game, however, Game On upended the Kaua‘i squad 33-30 for the title.
Team Central’s V.J. Carineo earned all-tournament team honors.
“Kimela Keahiolalo and her staff of the Boy’s & Girl’s Club of Lihu‘e accompanied the team on this trip,” Sales said in an e-mail. “Keahiolalo helped the boys stay at the club where the tournament was held to keep the cost down and, aside from the tournament, her staff was able to conduct a Smart Move program which our team benefited from.”
Team members include Keane Agoot, Kahale Fagarang, V.J. Carineo, Nathan Wong, Brian Andres and Canen Higa.
Team Central Basketball is a year-round basketball program and a nonprofit AAU organization.
“We are now open for registration for the upcoming season for boys and girls between the ages of 8 to 16,” Sales said. “Team Central Basketball’s mission is to create a competitive environment that will encourage our members to strive to do their best through the practice of fundamentals and the understanding of team play and good sportsmanship.”
Team Central is also an active participant in tournaments and leagues locally and throughout the state.
“Exposure is key for the club and we keep the welfare of the player first, foremost and entirely free of adult quest for glory,” Sales said.
