Hawaiian edged Namolokama I by less than five minutes to capture the overall and open division titles at the Na Pali Challenge race on Saturday.
Hawaiian’s crew members were Margie Kawaide, Theresa Felgae, Kelley Fey, Dane Ward, Cherisse Keli‘i, Darci Gray, David Beck, C.J. Day, Bill Pratt, Donavon Leandro, Maui Kjeldsen and Steve Baker.
Hawaiian crossed the finish line with a time of 4:41.13 and Namolokama I tallied a 4:45.48.
Namolokama II (4:52.57), Niumalu I (4:54.08) and Pu‘uwai I (4:55.29) rounded out the top five overall finishers.
In the master’s division, Namolokama (5:05.26) ran past two Pu‘uwai crews for the win.
Dan Sullivan, Mick Callahan, Tom Thompson, Gene Lopez, Lance Laney, Kawika Goodale, Jeanne Kapp, Janey Delaney, Renona Del Coppa, Margie Goodno, Brenda Scott Rogers and Loala Aea made up the winning master’s team. Pu‘uwai III crossed at 5:21.51 and Pu‘uwai IIII came into the finish line at 5:44.13.
In the meantime, Kawaihae triumphed in the senior master’s contest with a time of 5:31.12. Kaiola followed close behind at 5:32.43.
Kawaihae paddlers were Jim Budda, Bob Momsen, Becky Thurston, Cathy Sheeley, Ron Hochi, David Rieow, Patsy Sheehan, Sammie Stanbro, Susan LaLane, Sherri Carney, Mike Spalding and Cappy Sheeley.
Kaiola I (4:47.24), Hanalei I (4:59.04), Kaiola II (5:01.08), Namolokama (5:05.08) and Manueiwa (5:18.04) finished up in the overall top 10.
