Mokihana Aquatics’ annual fun meet was a huge success once again, but if not for the support of parents and volunteers, the event wouldn’t have been possible.a
“I can’t stress enough how much parents and volunteers have helped out,” Mokihana Aquatics coach and meet director Orlando Anaya said. “They truly make this meet happen.”
Anaya also said the meet was the best since the late 1980s, when it was held in Kapa‘a.
“We had 10 teams, eight off-island teams, 168 swimmers and a little over 1,300 entries,” he said. “I’ve received so many e-mails and phone calls complimenting the meet.”
The annual event signals the end of a season in swimming throughout the state.
“The emphasis has always been on fun,” Anaya said. “We had a clown, fish pond, short races so the kids could enjoy themselves and we finished early enough so the visiting teams could see the island.”
The ‘Fun Meet’ gave the opprtunity for kids to swim and have some fun as well.
“We’ve gotten nothing but rave reviews from all the swim clubs,” Anaya said. “The parents helped out a lot. They did it all for the kids. They worked all day Saturday and Sunday. Mokihana Aquatics has always been more about swimming.”
Anaya said next year’s meet should be the best ever.
“It’s probably money in the bank that we’ll have more than 200 swimmers next year,” he said. “That’s a big improvement from previous years.”
Results from the event will be published in Friday’s sports section.
