Fans will have to wait until Sept. 8 to find out the outcome of the JV encounter between Kapa‘a and Waimea high schools.
Between the two teams battling through four quarters, 38 points were tallied in the end zones, but at the final buzzer, the scoreboard read 0-0 as penalties nullified score after score on both ends of the field.
The yellow flag continued to plague the Kapa‘a varsity squad in their contest against Kamehameha in the nightcap.
Kamehameha Big Island capitalized on a tiring Kapa‘a defense to erupt for 20 points in the second half en route to a 27-0 win.
Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, Kapa‘a had an opportunity to tie the contest when Daniel Lizama swept right for six yards into the end zone.
But that score was called back on an illegal formation penalty and the ensuing tries saw the pigskin travel backwards with Kapa‘a quarterback Coty Salusa getting sacked for a nine-yard loss with just 46 ticks left in the half.
Kamehameha Big Island lost little time getting on the scoreboard as quarterback Nick Miyasato connected with Reece Alnas on a flea-flicker play for a 41-yard hit on their first possession. Tauati Kamaka booted the PAT for the 7-0 lead.
Soon after the half Alnas came back in the third quarter with a 10-yard run to paydirt to cap an 80-yard scoring drive.
Miyasato connected with Russell Kackley on a 30-yard pass to set the stage for their third score as Makina AhQuin tapped the end zone on a four-yard dash. The PAT failed, but the Big Island school led 20-0.
Another Miyasato-Kackley aerial hit clinched the win for Kamehameha in the fourth quarter as the PAT boot locked up the 27-0 win.
Kamehameha finished the contest with 351 yards compared with the 111 yards peeled off by Kapa‘a, according to statistics provided by Anahola Joel Pahukula.
AhQuin topped all rushers with 84 yards on 11 carries including the four-yard touchdown scamper, followed by Ross Macanas, who finished with 40 yards on nine touches.
Miyasato completed nine passes on 18 attempts for 184 yards with no interceptions while Salausa had just three completions on 14 attempts for 55 yards.
Kackley was the top receiver with four receptions for 109 yards, followed by Alnas who finished with 51 yards on five receipts.
Travis Nakamura was the top rusher for Kapa‘a with 39 yards on 13 carries, followed by Salausa’s 11 yards on 10 carries. Lizama finished with three yards.
Over on the Big Island, Waimea High School capped their Saturday night outing by posting a 20-6 half-time lead and held on for a 33-20 victory over the Hilo Vikings.
As results of the Saturday KIF football games came to light, one fan said, “That’s preseason football.”
The KIF football season kicks off on Sept. 8 when Kapa‘a hosts Waimea at Vidinha Stadium.
