Chris Woo, arguably the greatest Hawai‘i-born swimmer, is hosting a free Stroke, Turn and Start Swim Clinic/Forum tomorrow at Kaua‘i High School’s pool.
From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., immediately following the last race of Mokihana Aquatics’ annual Fun Meet, swimmers and non-swimmers are invited to chat with the 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist.
“Chris and I go way back,” meet director Orlando Anaya said. “In the early 80s, I was the trainer for Special Olympic swim coaches and Chris came back from the Olympics in 1982, so he became the spokesman for the Special Olympics of Swimming. We met on the plane on the way to workshops and we became really good friends.”
The clinic is open to everyone and Woo will be signing autographs.
“Everyone should bring a swim cap or T-shirt for him to sign,” Anaya said.
Now a dentist on O‘ahu, Woo comes back to Kaua‘i every once in a while to lend his expertise in swimming to youths.
“We’ve done numerous clinics with numerous people,” Anaya said. “Kaua‘i is lucky to have him.”
Anaya said many teams are staying for the clinc.
“That just shows what a draw he is,” he said.
