Department of Land and Natural Resources officials announced the Monday start date for the first phase of roadway improvements to Koke‘e Road in the Koke‘e State Park.
“This roadway is heavily used by residents and visitors,” DLNR chair Peter Young said in a release. “The Kalalau and Pu‘u O Kila lookouts, numerous hiking trails, and the unique natural ambiance have drawn many people. Deterioration from aging and wet weather conditions have increased the risks on this roadway to vehicles and drivers.”
Young said the improvements are part of Gov. Linda Lingle’s focus on park improvements.
The Koke‘e roadway improvements include the Koke‘e State Park sign to the 15-mile marker, the Mo‘ohihi Road/campground intersection, the Pu‘u O Kila lookout parking lot and entry road and minor repairs at the Kalalau Lookout parking lot, the DLNR release states.
During construction, one lane on the roadway will be kept open with appropriate traffic control to assure park users safe access on Koke‘e Road.
“We appreciate the public’s patience as we improve our park facilities for everyone to enjoy,” said Young. “We hope these improvements will encourage park users to help care for the facilities and leave them in good, clean condition for other park users.”
Phase 2 includes roadway improvements leading up to Kalalau Lookout, as well as a new comfort station and parking lot at the lookout.
The DLNR said Phase 1 is projected to cost $590,000. Niu Construction has been contracted for the work, which is expected to take seven months.
