Emilio G. Yanos
Emilio G. Yanos of Kekaha, Kaua‘i, died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Sept. 6, 2006 at the age of 100. Born in Ilocos Norte, Philippines on Sept. 4, 1906, he was a cane carrier operator with Kekaha Sugar. He is survived by a son, Andres (Janet Haffner) Yanos of Washington state; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Luz Yanos of Washington, Dolores Yanos and Florencia Yanos both of Philippines; stepson Marcelino (Margaret) Tacub of Honolulu, O‘ahu; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at the Kekaha United Methodist Church; service to be officiated by Rev. James Brooking will begin at 10 a.m. Casual attire.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Ed Otter
Ed Otter of Wainiha, Hanalei, Kaua‘i died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 20, 2006 at the age of 63. Born in Los Angeles on March 10, 1943, he was a teacher, philosopher and private caregiver before moving to Kaua‘i in 1994.
He is survived by his sister Linda Aust of Pomona, cousin Dona Strickland of Palm Desert, Calif., and friends Ken Jopling of Kapa‘a, Jane Ely of Lihu‘e and Jason Yaris of Lihu‘e.
Embracing the culture of Hawai‘i, Ed studied huna and the writings of Nana Veary. For many years he assisted Nathan Kalama as a volunteer with the Mokihana Festival. His Italian heritage, travels with the Peace Corps and studies in France gave him an appreciation of all people and a zest for life, international cooking and fine wines.
Friends and family are invited to share in celebration of Ed’s life on Sunday, Sept. 24 gathering at 1 p.m. for a beach lu‘au at Black Pot Park in Hanalei. Please bring a story or photo to share. Abraham Rivera
Abraham Rivera of Newmill, Kaua‘i died at Kaua‘i Veteran’s Memorial Hospital on Sept. 14, 2006. Born in Koloa on Sept. 2, 1946, he was a retired E6 staff sergeant with the Army National Guard for 23 years and worked for the McBryde Sugar Company.
He is survived by sister Lucy (Gabriel) Santiago and brother Daniel (Rubyjane) Rivera; sons Aaron, Abraham, Jonathan, Puna and Alex Rivera; daughter Kaui Doldolea; 12 grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is set for Sept. 23 at Koloa Church at 10:30 a.m.; burial follows at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Casual attire.
