The 2006-07 KIF season opens Wednesday when Waimea hosts Kapa‘a for the first volleyball game of the season.
During the recent Waimea High School Boys Volleyball Invitational that saw Maryknoll capture the title by downing Hawai‘i Baptist Academy, Waimea coach Bobby Kamakele anticipated a strong KIF boys season.
Kapa‘a High School is the defending KIF champion in both boys and girls volleyball.
During pool play of that tournament, all three Kaua‘i schools had an opportunity to play each other, and all three schools split 1-1.
According to the KIF schedule revised Aug. 1, varsity and JV volleyball matches will be played at separate venues.
In the first round that starts Wednesday, the boys will be playing first starting at 5 p.m. The girls will follow, but starting no earlier than 6:30 p.m. In the second round that begins Oct. 4, the order of play will reverse with the girls playing first.
JV volleyball will be played in a round robin tournament format starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kapa‘a High School gym.
Following Wednesday’s opener, the Menehune will travel to Kaua‘i High School on Saturday.
Waimea High School boys and girls air riflery teams will have an opportunity to defend their KIF title Thursday when they host the Kapa‘a shooters at the Hanapepe Armory starting at 3 p.m. for the first air riflery match of the season.
At the same time, Kaua‘i High School will be hosting Island School at their Lala Road campus.
Friday night, football fans will see Waimea head coach Kyle Linoz inaugurate the KIF football season when Waimea hosts Kapa‘a at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 7:35 p.m.
This varsity contest will be preceded by the JV contest kicking off at 5 p.m.
This contest will be aired live on KQNG AM 570 by Anahola Joel Pahukula.
During the pre-season contests, both Waimea and defending KIF champion Kaua‘i high schools swept both their pre-season contests. Kapa‘a finished their pre-season 1-1 with a loss to Kamehameha Hawai‘i at Vidinha Stadium.
More KIF action will take place starting Sept. 23 when Kapa‘a High School hosts the first KIF cross country meet starting tentatively at 9 a.m.
Bowlers will hit the lanes at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center on Sept. 23 starting at 2 p.m.
