When the Red Raiders take on Kapa‘a next Friday, head coach Keli‘i Morgado won’t be there.
Morgado’s moment of jubilation following his team’s third touchdown turned sour when the Red Raider bench was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, their second of the game.
Following the rules established by the KIF, Morgado was not only ejected from the game but will also sit out their next game.
The moment soured an otherwise brilliant night for Kaua‘i, which soundly defeated Waimea 30-0 Friday night before a near-capacity crowd at Vidinha Stadium.
The game, however, was much closer than that through most of four quarters. With Kaua‘i leading 7-0 heading into the fourth, defense on both sides of the ball had dominated.
Kaua‘i’s defense then continue to dominate while Waimea’s could not overcome its offense’s late turnovers as two Menehune fumbles opened the floodgates. After Darren Satta recovered the first fumble, Red Raider quarterback Andrew Renaud hit Jonathan Gebauer for a touchdown with 4:17 left in the game. The PAT made it 16-0.
Within a minute, Micah Hee pounced on another fumble and Renaud all but sealed the deal on a six-yard TD pass to Brendan Young.
Despite their coach’s departure after the last touchdown, the Red Raiders struck again when Young broke off a 43-yard run with 2:17 left. Tyrus Ceria-Lux booted the PAT for the 30-0 final.
Renaud opened the scorebooks in the second quarter on a nine-yard pass to Pono Matthews in the left pocket.
With 6:49 left in the third, Lemke booted the lead to double digits on a 39-yard field goal.
The question of Kaua‘i’s ability to contain the run was answered when Waimea was held to less than 100 yards rushing compared with the 280 yards they picked up against Kapa‘a last week.
Waimea could only muster 76 total yards on the night. The Red Raider pass defense stymied two potential Menehune touchdown passes in the end zone, both coming at crucial points in the third quarter.
Waimea (1-1) takes the week off as Kaua‘i (1-0) goes up against Kapa‘a (0-1) Friday at Vidinha.
The JV contest kicks off at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
Anahola Joel Pahukula will provide live broadcast of the game via KQNG Am570.
