HONOLULU For only the second time ever, the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers is endorsing a Republican for governor.
SHOPO announced its official endorsement this week of Gov. Linda Lingle and Lt. Gov. James Aiona Jr.
SHOPO also endorsed Lingle and Aiona in 2002.
“We still truly believe they are the best people to lead Hawaii,” SHOPO President Tenari Maafala said in a press release from Lingle’s campaign office. “They are committed to safety on our streets, in our neighborhoods, and for our members.”
“Today’s announcement illustrates our collective ability to work together to make Hawaii safer,” Lingle said in a statement. “Through the tremendous support from SHOPO and the hard work of our police officers around the state over the last four years, we have delivered on our promise to get tough on crime and drug abuse.”
Lingle went on to list wiretapping and electronic surveillance, nuisance abatement laws, a three-strikes violent crime law and harsher measures to prevent identity theft and sexual predation as specific measures her administration has contributed to law enforcement.
SHOPO is the labor union that represents approximately 2,700 police officers from all four counties.
