Out of respect for his wife who died earlier this week, husband Kaleo Ho‘okano wants those who were her friends to know she passed away because of medical complications.
Rae Nishimoto Ho‘okano, 55, was found Monday semi-conscious in front of Waimea Plantation Cottages. She was later pronounced dead at the Kaua‘i Veterans’ Memorial Hospital. Kaua‘i police released her name yesterday.
The initial investigation and autopsy results indicated no signs of foul play. The case is pending until the results of the toxicology test are known, according to police.
“It wasn’t a trauma,” Ho‘okano said. “The detectives came and talked to me, my kids, and explained that she died from some medical issues.”
Ho’okano and other family members wanted residents to know there weren’t any questionable circumstances surrounding her death, so that the homeless people on a Waimea beach wouldn’t be unjustly blamed for having anything to do with it, they said.
“She was such a loving person,” Ho‘okano said. “She wouldn’t want anyone being a vigilante because of this. Even if someone had hurt her, she wouldn’t want that. She was a kind, nice person.”
