HANAMA‘ULU — A tour bus collided with a rental car yesterday afternoon on Kuhio Highway near the Roberts Hawaii Tours baseyard, killing one man.
Two female visitors riding in the rental car sustained injuries and were taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not known at press time.
The bus driver, who was traveling alone, was not injured.
The accident occurred around 4:15 p.m., closing Kuhio Highway in both directions between the Kuhio and Kapule highway junction and the Hilton Kauai Beach Resort for several hours.
To alleviate traffic congestion from the accident, police began re-directing motorists to the emergency bypass road between the Roberts baseyard and the Hilton at about 5 p.m., alternating traffic flow in one direction at a time.
At about 6:30 p.m., northbound lanes of Kuhio Highway were reopened. Police were still redirecting motorists heading south onto the emergency bypass road hours after.
The southbound lane reopened around 8 p.m.
Authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The identity of the man killed is being held until proper notifications have been made.
