PRINCEVILLE — Morning mist may have prevented any tennis yesterday, but The Club at Hanalei co-owner Ryan “Koko” Chang is optimistic about this weekend.
Today is the deadline for tennis players to register for the Valentine Round Robin tournament that will coincide with the grand opening celebration for the new tennis facility near the Hanalei Bay Resort.

“Four of the courts have been resurfaced to specifications,” Chang said. “The remaining four are scheduled for resurfacing next month.”
One of the features of The Club will be two Webcams that allow Internet visitors a live view of the courts, said Chang.
Logowear including Prince, Babolat and Adidas are starting to appear in the tennis shop, as well as more tennis racquets, shoes and accessories.
The idea is to bring state-of-the-art tennis teaching aids back to the North Shore, co-owner Karlos deTreaux said in a release.
One of the three ball machines is capable of producing serves up to 100 mph.
In addition to the full-service tennis shop, Chang and deTreaux plan to offer instruction and clinics.
Players for this weekend’s round-robin tournament need not be members of the United States Tennis Association to enter, Chang said.
“We just want to invite tennis players to come and check out our facilities and enjoy and celebrate our grand opening,” he said.
Tournament play will include divisions 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0, and possibly 8.5. He said The Club is more than happy to accommodate those leagues who hold league play on Sunday, the second day of the two-day celebration tournament.
Entry fee is $20 per person, or $40 per team. Registration forms are available at tennis facilities, or by calling The Club at 826-6522 (ext. 8).
Play will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and once the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season gets into full swing, Chang said The Club will serve as home court for Kula School.
