Lighthouse Day is being celebrated at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on May 5, from 10 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. It is the one time each year when visitors can receive a guided tour to the top of the lighthouse and see the famous Fresnel lens. Tours will be offered every half hour from 10:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
The Kilauea Point Lighthouse, including the roof above the famous lens, is in need of repair. A lighthouse restoration campaign began at last year’s Lighthouse Day. Engraved bricks were sold to raise funds for restoration.
The first 400 bricks are now in the ground at the point. Bricks will be on sale May 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition, Naomi Yokotake’s Hula Halau ‘O Hanalei will perform at 5 p.m. Children can make a lighthouse magnet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the crown jewel will be lit at 7 p.m.
