The Kaua‘i Fire Department was busy this weekend, as two brush fires spawned flames and razed brush Friday and yesterday.
Yesterday’s fire seared less than one acre near Kaumokila and Nonou roads in Wailua, Batallion Chief Russell Yee said.
The fire began about 2 p.m., roughly 24-hours after Friday’s blaze in Waimea. Though an official cause of the fire was not known at press time, Yee said it was believed to have begun from residents burning rubbish in their yard. Engines and brush trucks from stations two and three responded. Firefighters had the Wailua fire under control within 20 minutes, Yee said.
The past two months have yielded seven house fires. Fire Chief Robert Westerman has said that it’s critical that residents have functioning smoke detectors and evacuation plans.
