KALAHEO — A double overtime win, winning with only six players on a roster, and breaking an undefeated winning streak were just some of the elements that treated basketball fans to some excitement in Kalaheo, Thursday.
Jayme Jacinto of the Kaulupono Girls came up with a critical bucket in the last 12 seconds to force the double overtime win over the Lihu‘e Kamikaze, 35-30. Kelan Sakuda picked up the pace in the paint to lead the Southwest Boyz “A” team to a 36-33 edge over previously undefeated Kalepa Hillsiders in Game 2, and in the finale, Wailua, playing with just six players on its roster, got step-up performance from David Mendes in its 41-38 win over the Southwest Boyz “B” team.
With three seconds showing on the clock, Keven Hanano’s Kamikaze had an opportunity to lock up the contest following Jacinto’s game-tying bucket.
But the normally torrid free throw shooter went cold as her first shot rattled the cage and bounced left. Her second shot twanged off the rim and bounced high to force the overtime.
Jacinto, racking up all her game-total 11 points in the fourth period and overtime, led the Kaulupono Girls’ victory followed by Mollie Connelly who chalked up six of her game-total 10 points in overtime.
Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade followed with 6 points. Pairs from Kathleen Cadiente, Kori Sakamoto and Aiko Grande rounded out the math.
Maureen Sibolboro, who finished with two three-point bombs, paced the Kamikaze with a game-high 15 points, one of the three-pointers keeping the Kamikaze alive in overtime.
Lauren James and Rachel Taira followed with 4 points each. Pairs from Bristy-Ann Agu and Korey Arashiro rounded out the effort.
Kelan Sakuda sparked the Southwest Boyz “A” defense and Clareson Torres supplied the firepower as the greenshirts edged out the Kalepa Hillsiders 37-33 in a close contest that saw the lead see-saw throughout the night.
Torres finished with a game-high 19 points with Sakuda chipping in 11 points besides his strong prescense in the paint. Alden Lahip added 4 points, Zachary Gardien had a pair, and a digit from Kyle Achuela rounded out the win.
For the previously-undefeated Hillsiders, Travis Stein paced the well-balanced scoring with 10 points. John Beralas and Kaleo Cummings followed with 8 points each and Aric Cansino finished with 7 points.
With five players from its roster absent, David Mendes combined with Cody Abigania and Davin Chong for a step-up performance that held the Southwest Boyz “B” team at bay, 41-38.
Mendes finished with 13 points to lead the way for Wailua while Abigania and Chong added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Curran Doctolero was tough in the paint and added 4 points. Brandon Chong rounded out the win with 3 points.
Braxton Garma led the Southwest Boyz “B” effort with a dozen points, 10 coming in the second half when the B team needed to step up play against Wailua. Following him, Xavier Guirao, James Sagucio and Mark Girad each netted 6 points, with Kalen Kali-Abihai adding 5 points. A three-point bomb from Kasey Okihara in the final period rounded out the effort.
