Kaua‘i High School’s Red Raider football team went 128 yards on 25 carries as they defeated the Kea‘au High School Cougars last night 35-6 at the Vidinha Stadium.
Kaua‘i’s starting quarterback Andrew Renaud connected for his first touchdown late in the second quarter. The 5’10 returning all-star threw to a wide-open Tyrus Ceria-Lux for a 6-yard touchdown.
That started off a scoring frenzy for the Raiders as they went on to score three more touchdowns within a matter of minutes.
Kea‘au, a Division I Big Island team, had a number of problems on the receiving end. It seemed like with every kick-off, the receivers just couldn’t hang on to the ball. Kaua‘i was able to score off two turnovers.
Kaua‘i’s Kupa Graycochea picked off an interception on the 14-yard line to put Renaud in good scoring position. Renaud then handed it off to running back Micah Alayvilla for a 15-yard touchdown.
With a little more than four minutes left, Kea‘au dropped another kick-off which Kaua‘i recovered.
A hand-off from Renaud to Dayne Murata put the Raiders on the 1-yard line.
On the second attempt, Alayvilla pushed his way to his second touchdown of the night.
Renaud connected Canaan Bernard with a minute left in the half for a 21-yard touchdown.
The Raiders were up 27-0 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, a 68-yard punt by Ceria-Lux rolled out of bonds to put the Cougars on the 1-yard line.
The Cougars couldn’t break the Raider defense.
Kelii Ruiz made the tackle in the end zone to give Kaua‘i 2 points on the safety.
Renaud scored a touchdown himself with 24 seconds left to end the third quarter.
Kea‘au was able to get on the boards late in the final quarter when Kea‘au quarterback Kona Pomroy connected with Joe Collins for a 35-yard touchdown.
Kaua‘i’s next preseason game will be on Aug. 24 against Hilo on the Big Island.
