KAPA‘A — Daniel Lizama came up with two big touchdowns as Kapa‘a High School defeated Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy 20-17 in its first preseason game at the Kapa‘a Stadium Complex.
The 5-11 senior running back picked up a 75-yard run with less than 30 seconds left of the first quarter. Lizama would also score Kapa‘a’s final touchdown in the third quarter. He went 93 yards in 14 carries.
Altogether, Kapa‘a went 120 yards in 29 carries.
Other scorers for the game were Ashten Lee who went 18 yards for a touchdown pass from Vaughn Nebre and Kaylan-Cody Gorospe who came up with two extra points.
For HPA, Jung Park first put them on the boards with a 27-yard field goal. Arrison Aquino sneaked through the pack for a 1-yard touchdown. Then Mana Purdy came up with a huge play for the Ka Makani when he rushed 55 yards for a touchdown.
HPA made several hail Mary attempts in the final seconds, but came up short each time.
Waimea 38, Waiakea 7
HILO — The Menehune of Waimea High School won their first preseason game 38-7 as they defeated the Warriors of Waiakea High School.
Two was the magic number for the Menehune play makers.
Kylen Chinen, Jayrald Watanabe and Oni Smith all had two touchdowns each and Cody Owen kicked two extra points.
Chinen made a 2-yard run and an 85-yard kick return. Watanabe had a 20-yard and 4-yard touchdown and Smith had a 23- and 30-yard run.
