A well-loved outdoor venue for live music on Kaua‘i — the Anahola Taro Patch stage — is set amid wild ginger and palm trees. The Taro Patch is much more than a stage for concerts though. It is the land base for the Anahola Ancient Culture Exchange.
Through AACE, the Taro Patch is shared with the community of Kaua‘i for activities such as school field trips, historic studies, teaching of traditional Hawaiian techniques such as agriculture, crafts, and celebrations.
This Sunday though, Big R Productions owner Robert Duggan brings two O‘ahu-based reggae bands to the Taro Patch. He started his company in March in a personal quest to bring more live music to the island.
Headlining the show is O‘ahu-based reggae band Natural Vibrations, followed by OOklah the Moc. OOklah the Moc, besides being a reggae band, is the name of a mid-80s cartoon character from the show “Thundarr the Barbarian.”
Both bands have a rasta groove, but Natural Vibrations has influences ranging from pop and rock roots — from Prince and Michael McDonald to Bob Marley and UB40, the band is known for its diversified shows.
This gang of friends, who first started playing together at neighborhood parties in 1993, has put out five albums. Their latest album is titled “From the Heart” and is available through either Sharlen Oshiro & Associates or on iTunes.
The band has shared the stage with Steel Pulse, 311, Maxi Priest and Jimmy Cliff, just to name a handful. According to its Web site, the band’s mission is to promote harmony and fun through music and lifestyle.
“This is a great show to bring the whole family to,” said Duggan.
Kids under 12 are free. Bring chairs, blankets and water. The show is Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
AACE is supported solely through donations and fund-raising projects.
