The developer of the Poipu Aina Estates off Ala Kinoikai Road drew the ire of many South Kaua‘i residents a year ago when it destroyed some roadside trees to make way for its project.
Responding to community concerns, Silver Oaks Investments, based in Seal Beach, Calif., generated goodwill a year later by planting eight shower trees on the road Thursday.
Six trees were originally destroyed for the widening and grading of parts of the road according to project manager Wayne Keifer. Two other trees were planted Thursday for good measure.
The planting of new trees would not have been done had it not been for the persistence of Carol Ann Davis-Briant, a board member of the Koloa Community Association, according to 16th District House Rep. Roland Sagum, representing West Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau and a consultant to the developer.
Davis-Briant, who joined a small group for the tree-planting exercise Thursday, was among 80 South Shore residents who planted 150 trees along the road 10 to 15 years ago as part of a community project.
“Thanks to Carol Ann Davis-Briant. She saw the trees coming down, and she called me,” Sagum said. “She is the eyes and ears of the community.”
Installing the plants were Kauai Nursery and Landscaping in Puhi.
Also participating in the tree-planting exercise was Abby Santos, co-owner with Frank Santos of No Kai Oi Plants and Landscape in Hanapepe, which provided landscaping services for the agricultural subdivision project.
