Mary Atkinson
Mary Elizabeth Atkinson of Wailua Homesteads died on Sept. 23, 2007, at Straub Hospital at the age of 23.
Born July 12, 1984, in Roanoke, Va., she lived much of her life in Asheville, N.C. For the past four years, she has loved living with her family on Kaua‘i, making many new friends and true ‘ohana with her lovable and loving ways.
Mary was a volunteer for the Kaua‘i Humane Society and a member of ARC. She completed high school at Kapa‘a High in 2004.
She is survived by her parents Joshua and Annaleah Atkinson and sister Christina of Kaua‘i, brother Paul Kelley of Texas, grandmother Betty Stanley of Virginia, grandmother Margo Bamman of New York, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins from throughout the Mainland.
Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, at their home. A celebration of Mary’s life and brief service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at 5552 Kuamo‘o Road in Wailua Homesteads, just past Opaeka‘a Falls.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to “The Mary Elizabeth Gotta Have It” fund for ARC clients be considered.
Pilar Laureta De Lucas
Pilar Laureta Vida De Lucas of Lihu‘e, died Sept. 22, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 84.
Born Oct. 12, 1922, in the Philippines, she was a sales clerk.
She is survived by sons Esteban (Felicitas) Lucas and Victor Lucas; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Lihue Salvation Army Community Center, where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
Cremation to folow. The family suggests casual attire and asks that no gifts be given.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Torao ‘Jack’ Nada
Torao “Jack” Nada of Hanapepe, died on Sept. 24, 2007, at his home at the age of 80.
Born Oct. 22, 1926, in Makaweli, he was the son of the late Zenkichi and Tsuneko Nada.
As a business entrepreneur, he was the president of Thrifty Mart, Inc. He was a founding member of the Hanapepe Church of the Nazarene and remained an active member for 50 years. The Kauai Pop Warner League and the Kaumaka Baseball League were organized by Jack Nada.
He was also an integral part of the Hanapepe Colts football team. Besides these accomplishments, he was involved in various community associations such as the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Kauai Jaycees and the Westside Rotary Club. His favorite pastime activities were playing golf and socializing with his friends and customers. His greatest joy was the time he spent with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife Irene Yukimi, and children Marlene (Conrad) Oishi of Mililani, O‘ahu, Debbie Miyao of Honolulu, Kathleen Nada-Schrader of Renton, Wash.; Dr. Aaron (Dawn) Nada of Honolulu, Clyde (Lota) Nada of Hanapepe and Laura (Francis) Mission of ‘Ele‘ele. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; sisters Fujiko (Sadamu) Akamine and Hiroko (Hiroshi) Matsuoka; brother Herbert (Ethel) Nada; sister-in-law Sue Nada; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Yoshiyuki Nada.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Hanapepe Church of the Nazarene on Pepe Road in Hanapepe. A service to commemorate his life will be held at 11 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Robert E. Offley
Robert E. Offley of Kapahi died at home surrounded by his loved ones on Sept. 22, 2007, at the age of 74.
Born in Pasadena, Calif., he also lived in the Marshall Islands before arriving on Kaua‘i in late 1972, promptly falling in love with the island, and relocating his family here in May 1973. He worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, eventually earning his contractor’s license. In later years, he ran Kakalina’s Bed and Breakfast together with his wife, Kathy.
Preceded in death by his first wife Liz Offley, he is survived by his wife Kathy Offley, daughters Torrey Offley and Kathleen (John) Deppe; sons Caleb (Sarah) Offley and Josh (Sharon) Offley; step-daughters Heather (Jason) Barth and Lisa (Bo) Cockrell; his grandchildren, Aidan, Anais, Ella, Colby, and Sydney; and a legacy of laughter and fine woodworking.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kaua‘i Hospice.
