Kaua‘i High School head football coach Derek Borrero pumped his fist to the beat of the band after the Red Raiders scored their fifth touchdown of the night.
But Kaua‘i didn’t stop there as they continued to dominate the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation season opener, beating Kapa‘a High School 42-0 last night at Vidinha Stadium.
The defending KIF champions (1-0 KIF, 3-0 on the season) saw an incredible 47-yard TD pass from starting quarterback Andrew Renaud to receiver Blake Gingerich.
With Kapa‘a defenders surrounding him, Gingerich was able to hold onto the ball and launch himself past the goal line for the first TD of the official KIF season.
In the second quarter, Kapa‘a (0-1, 1-2) seemed to pick up some momentum when Joseph Velasco intercepted a pass from Renaud intended for one of his receivers.
Kapa‘a was unable to capitalize on the play and Kaua‘i regained possession.
After a huge 33-yard run by Gingerich, Kaua‘i was in good scoring position. Renaud, then handed off the ball to Kelii Ruiz for a 3-yard run and Kaua‘i’s second TD.
After the half, in what was like an instant replay of his first-quarter TD catch, Gingerich another long pass adding to Kaua‘i’s lead. Gingerich was later named the Player of the Game.
Other scorers for the game were, Donovan Refamonte, Scott Taylor and Gage Gusman.
Renaud came out of the game with under five minutes left of play and gave the quarterback duties to Gingerich.
Renaud finished the game hitting 12 of his 23 passes for 178 yards, with two interceptions. Tyrus Ceria-Lux hit every one of his extra-point attempts, including one from the 15-yard line.
Kaua‘i will play Waimea High School next week at the Hanapepe Stadium.
