“My whole life changed when my husband passed away in 1998 at age 40,” said Terri Castillo of New York City.
Terri is the daughter of Norma Castillo and the sister of Patty Furtado, Joanne Brun and Leslie Scales, all of Kaua‘i. Terri returns to the Garden Island this month to attend her nephew’s wedding and to celebrate her mother’s 80th birthday. She will also provide a free lecture on her healing journey.
“Kaua‘i is known for its lush beauty and also for its healing energy,” she said. “Coming home never fails to revive my spirits and bring me into harmony.”
Castillo had been with her husband, Thomas Chapin, an internationally well-known avant-garde jazz musician, for 10 years when he was diagnosed with leukemia.
“We battled it for one year. We married in the hospital during his third round of chemotherapy. He passed on three months later,” said Castillo.
After her loss Castillo studied with a healer in Italy and New York City. She began to heal, but she felt she needed to make bolder changes.
In 2001, she left her 20-year publishing career as a book editor. She decided to travel around the world for one year. “I felt I had to make a big turnaround in my life,” she said.
In 2003, she sublet her New York City apartment and left for what she now calls a “year of personal enrichment.”
When she returned to New York City in 2004, she started work to preserve her late husband’s music legacy and supported herself through consulting work. But it wasn’t enough. “I was still restless. I was still searching for healing, but this time not just for myself, but to help others.”
In fall 2005, Terri attended a five-hour film on the life of the healer Bruno Groening, who came into prominence in Germany after World War II because of his biblical-style healings of thousands.
“His humble life as a healer moved me because he said he had no other purpose than to follow his calling given by God: to help sick and burdened people back to health,” Castillo said.
Bruno Groening died in 1959, but his healings continue today worldwide.
“I knew then I wanted to be a part of this healing work,” said Castillo. Today she is leader and public lecturer for two of six groups in Manhattan and is co-leader of New York for the Bruno Groening Circle of Friends, which meets in small groups for healing all over the world.
Terri will give a free introductory lecture about spiritual healing through the teaching of Bruno Groening on Kauai at 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the Lihu‘e Library Conference Room. For more information call Leslie Scales at 651-0885 or lcscales@hawaiiantel.net
