Dr. John Dillon
Long-time Kaua‘i resident Dr. John B. Dillon died Sept. 27, 2007 at the age of 95.
Born in San Benito, Texas, Oct. 11, 1911, Dr. Dillon was world-renowned for the contributions he has made to modern anesthesia. His achievements paved the way for modern surgical techniques such as open-heart surgery.
Dr. Dillon founded the University of California at Los Angeles Department of Anesthesiology in 1961. As the first chairman of this department he saw it grow to where it is now one of the foremost anesthesia departments in the U.S.
He was accorded world recognition by many medical societies and has served on notable medical committees dedicated to the advancement of anesthesiology.
A veteran of WWII, he received his training at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, and was discharged as a captain in the U.S. Army.
Dr. Dillon is survived by a step-daughter, Terry Scott, wife of Larry Scott, formerly of Kaua‘i but now living in Oregon. Dr. Dillon was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances, for whom he established a nursing scholarship program at Kaua‘i Community College. This fund is administered by the Rotary Club of Po‘ipu Beach where he was one of its founders. His generosity extended to UCLA where he bequeathed his home.
A ham radio operator, Dr. Dillon was recognized by the County of Kaua‘i for providing the sole source of communications from the island after Hurricane ‘Iniki.
Charlotte Scott was married to him after the death of his first wife.
Services will be private. Contributions may be sent to the Rotary Club of Po‘ipu Beach Foundation where the funds will be used for nursing scholarships, P.O. Box 995, Koloa, HI 96756.
Candy Lee Beck
Candy Lee Beck, “Kandie” died on Aug. 15, 2007, after a lifelong struggle with illness at the age of 56. She was lovingly cared for by her partner of more than 30 years, Juan Dux, of Kalaheo.
She is survived by sisters Virginia Beck of Kalaheo; Jay Rendall of Athens, Greece; Kathryn Paquin of Arkansas; and brother David Beck, of Lake Tahoe, Calif. She is preceded in death by her father Clarence Earle Beck and mother Patricia Lucilla Beck.
A private memorial will be held by family and friends. Kandie loved animals, and donations may be made to the Kauai Humane Society or to the YWCA for their continuing work for women in her name.
Masami Ebesu
Masami Richard Ebesu, of Kapa‘a, died at home on Sept. 18, 2007, at the age of 87.
Born in Kapa‘a, on Oct. 1, 1919, he was a devoted husband and loving father. He retired with the County of Kaua‘i as a carpenter.
He is survived by children LaVerne (George) Huddy of Kapa‘a, Bronwyn (Bob) Farias of Kapa‘a, Maureen (Carl) Dusenberry of Waimea, Derek (Cindee) Ebesu of Kapa‘a, Zoe Ann (Myles) McCullen of Kapa‘a, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, Oct. 13, at St. Catherine Church from 9 a.m. and services celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Fr. Edgar Villanueva.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Ebesu family with arrangements.
Pilar Laureta De Lucas
Pilar Laureta Vida De Lucas of Lihu‘e, died Sept. 22, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 84
Born Oct. 12, 1922, in the Philippines, she was a sales clerk.
She is survived by sons Esteban (Felicitas) Lucas and Victor Lucas; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Lihue Salvation Army Community Center, where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. The family suggests casual attire and asks that no gifts be given.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Torao ‘Jack’ Nada
Torao “Jack” Nada, of Hanapepe, died on Sept. 24, 2007, at his home at the age of 80.
Born Oct. 22, 1926, in Makaweli, he was the son of the late Zenkichi and Tsuneko Nada.
As a business entrepreneur, he was the president of Thrifty Mart, Inc. He was a founding member of the Hanapepe Church of the Nazarene and remained an active member for 50 years. The Kauai Pop Warner League and the Kaumaka Baseball League were organized by Jack Nada. He was also an integral part of the Hanapepe Colts football team. Besides these accomplishments, he was involved in various community associations such as the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Kauai Jaycees and the Westside Rotary Club. His favorite pastime activities were playing golf and socializing with his friends and customers. His greatest joy was the time he spent wth his famiy.
He is survived by his loving wife Irene Yukimi, and childen Marlene (Conrad) Oishi of Mililani, O‘ahu, Debbie Miyao of Honolulu, Kathleen Nada-Schrader of Renton, Wash., Dr. Aaron (Dawn) Nada of Honolulu, Clyde (Lota) Nada of Hanapepe and Laura (Francis) Mission of ‘Ele‘ele. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; sisters Fujiko (Sadamu) Akamine and Hiroko (Hiroshi) Matsuoka; brother Herbert (Ethel) Nada; sister-in-law Sue Nada; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Yoshiyuki Nada.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Hanapepe Church of the Nazarene on Pepe Road in Hanapepe. A service to commemorate his life will be held at 11 a.m.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Robert E. Offley
Robert E. Offley of Kapahi died at home surrounded by his loved ones on Sept. 22, 2007, at the age of 74.
Born in Pasadena, Calif., he also lived in the Marshall Islands before arriving on Kaua‘i in late 1972, promptly falling in love with the island, and relocating his family here in May 1973. He worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, eventually earning his contractor’s license. In later years, he ran Kakalina’s Bed and Breakfast together with his wife, Kathy.
Preceded in death by his first wife Liz Offley, he is survived by his wife Kathy Offley, daughters Torrey Offley and Kathleen (John) Deppe; sons Caleb (Sarah) Offley and Josh (Sharon) Offley; step-daughters Heather (Jason) Barth and Lisa (Bo) Cockrell; his grandchildren, Aidan, Anais, Ella, Colby, and Sydney; and a legacy of laughter and fine woodworking.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kaua‘i Hospice.
