Darryl D. Perry was a basketball player. Rev. Wayne Vidinha said it’s amazing how 43 years ago, they met in a locker room, and on Monday, got to share the stage when Darryl was sworn in as the new Kaua‘i police chief.
Kaua‘i Police Commissioner Russell Grady also was acquainted with some of the dignitaries in attendance while he played basketball, and Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann got to know Darryl through roundball.
Kaua‘i Mayor Bryan Baptiste added that he saw Darryl playing basketball back in school days, and on Monday, was still looking up at the new chief.
For the Mike Contrades ‘ohana who were in attendance at the chief’s swearing-in program, Courtney got started as one of Russell Grady’s players and now, in the off season, was coming off the soccer fields over the weekend.
Outside the basketball arena, Bill Dahle (he goes to football) was there … his radio equipment wasn’t, otherwise we’d hear the chief’s speech from the wings off the stage. Ed Kubo, Gary Shimabukuro (Shim-buck-a-roo) and company were there … where was Roy Nishida? He was the only one missing … even Dane Oda got invited to join the Wal-Mart meetings.
It seems like the basketball doesn’t just go through the hoop, it bounces in different arenas and opens doors for people like Rich Colipano who had a following of Kalepa Hillsiders during Danny Genegabuas’ paintball fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.
OK, gotta go see what new word Annette Hashimoto has conjured up for volleyball.
