KOLOA — The former Koloa courthouse will soon take on new life as a youth center.
The building, which is located at the front entrance to the parking lot of the Koloa Neighborhood Center, is currently undergoing construction to modify the large room.
“The work has been done by volunteers, and a lot of the materials we need have been donated,” Susan Cox, site manager of the Koloa Neighborhood Center, said.
Among those donated items is a wooden pool table that used to grace Stevenson’s Library at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa.
According to Cox, staff will instal and level the table next week. In addition to the pool table, the Grand Hyatt also offered up other items needed to convert the former courthouse into a configuration more practical for the community’s needs.
In addition to the youth center, Cox said the neighborhood center’s office will be relocated to the former courthouse. She added that the Koloa Senior Center will also be able to establish an office in the building.
Cox said once the renovation work for the courthouse is complete, she’ll be moving into her new office as well.
“Right now, we have people already wanting to use the facility,” she said.
One of those is a yoga instructor who hopes to host morning classes when the space is free.
“Koloa is a very busy place, and it’s hard to find meeting places,” Cox said. “I’ve already scheduled one of the rooms for a meeting because I’m assuming the work will be done and the place will be cleaned up since the volunteers having been coming in regularly.”
There has been no date set for the dedication of the addition to the Koloa Neighborhood Center, although Cox said the community is invited to visit and take advantage of the annual Koloa Senior Center bazaar on Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
That event will likely occur in its usual location at the neighborhood center, and as in the past, shoppers need to arrive early to get best dibs on the home-made bread, food and sushi.
