HONOLULU — Waimea High School’s Menehune will have to settle for sixth place in this year’s New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II State Volleyball Championships as the Lady Vikings of Hilo High School won the consolation match Saturday in three tight games, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-23.
Hilo (19-3) had the slight edge, offensively and defensively, over Waimea (11-6). Hilo’s Makamae Namahoe posted 13 kills and one ace; Heather Kaikuana had seven kills and one ace; and Kalena Holani had six kills. Rose Peace came up with 11 digs.
Tatum Gonsalves was Waimea’s biggest hitter with 12 kills and three aces. Tia Agader had six kills and Macy Parangao had eight digs. Brytney Yadao-Lanning posted four blocks.
This was Waimea’s second loss at a championship tournament.
Last week, the Menehune were taken down by top-ranked Hawaii Baptist Academy, which won the Division II title Saturday by defeating Seabury Hall in two games.
Prior to that, Waimea went undefeated in Round 2 in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation play. The Menehune faced Round 1 champions of Kaua‘i High School in the KIF playoff and won its second straight title.
In other Division II action, Seabury Hall finished the runners-up to HBA. Word of Life defeated Molokai High School in three games, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-18 to take third place. University High School took seventh defeating Honokaa High School 25-16 and 25-21.
