The University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team moved up only one spot to No. 15 in the BCS polls yesterday despite the 28-26 win over Nevada in Reno on Friday.
Kansas, the only other undefeated college football team aside from Hawai‘i, also moved up one spot to No. 2. Hawai‘i, however, moved down one spot in The Associated Press poll to No. 14, and down one spot in the USA Today poll at No. 13.
The Warriors (10-0) will have a short practice week this week as they take the Broncos of Boise State for the Western Athletic Championship at 4:05 p.m. (HST) Friday at Aloha Stadium. Boise State is the only ranked team Hawai‘i will have played all season.
This will be the highest two WAC teams have been ranked when playing each other since Oct. 22, 1994, when 11th-ranked Colorado State hosted 15th-ranked Utah in a game won by the Utes, 45-31. Both of those teams were undefeated at the time.
Last year, Boise State was the only undefeated team in the nation at 13-0 and is 10-1 this year. Boise State’s 23-1 record over the last two years is the best in the nation. Included in that record is a win over No. 7 Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.
The Broncos have a 17-game WAC winning streak while Hawai‘i has a 14-game conference winning streak.
The last time Hawai‘i lost a WAC game was Sept. 23, 2006, against Boise State, 41-34.
Currently, Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan leads the nation in passing touchdowns with 121. That statistic ties him with Brigham Young University’s Ty Detmer.
Brennan, who is only in his third season at Hawaii, has 13,087 passing yards and has a 70 percent completion rate.
Hawai‘i junior receiver Davone Bess became the WAC’s all-time leader in receptions in Friday’s game against Nevada and currently has 266 for 3,327 yards and 39 touchdowns in his three seasons.
Hawai‘i ends the season Dec. 1 against the University of Washington Huskies.
