Rains that fell continuously for more than three hours appeared to the the winner as both Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a high school JV soccer teams battled to ties Thursday night.
The boys sloshed to a 0-0 slugfest while the girls finished in a 1-1 tie in the rain.
Kaua‘i had at least two key opportunities to score but came up empty as the rain forced mistakes that kept the door from closing on the scoring windows.
In the first half, an offside penalty called back a shot in the net and a similar call sent groans of disappointment when the Raiders couldn’t capitalize on a shot in the box effort in the second half.
Malia Kagawa opened the girls’ scorebooks quickly, scoring after weaving through traffic in the 13th minute of the girls’ game.
Following that, Kapa‘a made adjustments and kept Kaua‘i in check, while the Raiders’ Teal Basquez kept watch in the backfield, going head-to-head with Kapa‘a’s Sierra Mayer on numerous occasions.
A late-game goal by Kapa‘a’s Laurie Anne Tamayo at the 64th minute pulled the Warriors to a 1-1 tie as some of the Kaua‘i players began having issues with their uniforms that were sodden from the constant rain.
Kaua‘i travels to Hanapepe Stadium, today, to meet the Waimea Menehune with the boys JV game kicking off at 10 a.m. The girls JV game starts at 11:45 a.m.
Varsity games are 1:30 p.m. for the boys and 3:30 p.m. for the girls.
