Anticipation isn’t normally this heavy so early in December. Who else was restless last night before going to bed, not knowing which bowl game, if any at all, would the University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team be going to?
With the win against Washington last night, how can they not get an invite to the Bowl Championship Series.
Hawai‘i has surely shown determination. And can you believe that come-from-behind win! What a game and what an ending! If your heart wasn’t pounding in that fourth quarter, there’s something wrong with you.
They belong in a bowl game.
They beat their opponents and showed they were able to handle being in the national spotlight.
It’s as if that was head coach June Jones’ plan all along: to launch Hawai‘i into becoming a media darling and powerhouse.
Since Jones took over back in 1999, he’s always welcomed the media onto the practice fields and into the locker rooms if only to prepare the players for their chance to shine or for a possible career in the NFL.
By allowing the media to follow them around, it makes them accustomed to all the attention. This makes it so that, when it comes to being a correspondent for ESPN’s “Jim Rome is Burning,” “Pardon the Interruption,” or playing in a BCS game, they don’t get nervous. It’s kind of like a normal occurrence for them.
It’s normal for fans to watch practice in the early morning and stick around to as many autographs as they can. It’s normal for fans to gather at the locker room exit after the games at Aloha Stadium. It’s normal for them to be on all the sports reels.
These guys are ready.
They are the only unbeaten team and played in the very last regular-season football game in the country last night. They had the longest winning streak in the country dating back to Hawai‘i’s win over Arizona State in the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl last year.
Why wouldn’t you give them a shot in the BCS, if only to see if they match up to the hype? Hawai‘i is No. 1 in scoring offense led by Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Jason Rivers and Ryan Grice-Mullen.
Why wouldn’t you give them a chance to show they can play against the big-money teams?
I think it is fair to say that many Hawai‘i fans have their fingers crossed as they anxiously await the announcement of the BCS selections. This has the same type of anticipatory feel most have on Christmas morning, waiting to open presents.
A BCS bid will no doubt be a wonderful gift to the Warrior football team for all their work throughout the season and a wonderful gift for Brennan. Brennan returned to Hawai‘i this year despite rumors of his possibly being drafted to the National Football League in the first round. He graduates this semester and what a great way to leave the school?
I think the only better way to end his career with Hawai‘i, if they make a bowl game, is if Brennan also gets invited to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. He finished in sixth place last year and kind of fell off the list this year, but with this season being the crazy one that it was, you just never know.
