Kapa‘a High School is hoping to announce who the Warriors’ new head football coach will be before the end of the year.
Sources close to The Garden Island were especting to hear word of the new coaching appointment by yesterday evening, but according to Kapa‘a Athletic Director Greg Gonsalves, there is no deadline for an announcement.
Gonsalves said the prospects have been narrrowed down to five candidates — four local and one Mainland coach. The names of the final candidates were not released.
All candidates have already been interviewed and will be notified by the school before any formal announcement will be made.
“We have not made any decisions yet,” said Gonsalves. “We’re really close.”
A formal committee was formed to evaluate all the candidates. Gonsalves also said he hopes to finalize a coach before the end of next week, pending meetings with Kapa‘a’s principal Gilmore Youn.
The football team was previously coached by Sia Salausa, who stepped down before the 2007 season started. Former assistant coach Steve Kaui took over as an interim coach.
The Warriors went 1-5 during the regular season, 2-8 overall.
Their first regular-season win came on the same night they celebrated their homecoming. They defeated the Menehune of Waimea High School 27-7.
