WAIMEA — The Kapa‘a High School Warriors exploded in the second half and scored 38 points to beat the Waimea High School Menehune 66-40 last night at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Waimea jumped out early to lead 5-0 in the opening minutes. Kapa‘a bounced back in the next series to tie the game 8-8. Waimea would end the first quarter up by 4 points at 13-9.
Kapa‘a was able to go score 5 unanswered points to take over the lead and go into the half at 26-20.
Kapa‘a then had its best quarter of the night in the third when it outscored Waimea 21-8.
The Warriors were led by Kaleo Cummings who finished with 17 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist. Kila Youn finished the night with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists. Thomas Gausepohl had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal.
For Waimea, Kaimana Girod finished 9 points and four rebounds. Gregory Griffin scored 4 points but posted nine rebounds, two blocks, three steals and an assist. Clareson Torres finished with 7.
In the junior varsity match, Waimea beat Kapa‘a 46-40 in overtime. Waimea’s Malcolm Carter finished with a season-high 32 points.
The Menehune’s best quarter came in the fourth when they outscored Kapaa 14-8.
The Warriors were led by Stephen Greenleaf who finished with 11 points.
