KAPA‘A — Basil Walton scored a season-high 23 points as he led Kaua‘i High School over Kapa‘a High School 97-67 Saturday night in Kapa‘a.
Kaua‘i was up by 12 points by the end of the first quarter, but Kapa‘a cut the lead to only 5 going into the half.
From then on, Kapa‘a was able to keep the game close all the way through the third quarter where the Warriors tied the game with a 3-pointer from Kila Youn. Walton made sure that didn’t last long as he made good on 2 more points.
Kapa‘a’s Keleo Cummings had the chance to tie the game again when he was sent to the foul line to shoot a pair, but missed both with six seconds left till the final quarter.
The Raiders (3-0) finally broke away from the Warriors (1-2) in the fourth outscoring them 24-14 to get to an 11-point lead.
Both teams had four players go into double digits: Kaua‘i’s Walton, Travis Stine (19) and Teila Huni (12) and Tyrus Ceria-Lux (10). Kapa‘a had three players on a roll: Youn (15), Kekoa Prem (18) and John Berales (13).
Kaua‘i was 10 of 20 from the free throw line, while Kapa‘a shot 11 of 18.
In the earlier junior varsity game, Kaua‘i defeated Kapa‘a 66-48. Kaua‘i was led by Nick Chow who scored 24 points, 12 of his points coming in the fourth quarter, and was 2 of 3 from the free throw line. Davone Florence scored 17 points and was 3 of 4 from the line.
For Kapa‘a, Stephen Greenleaf led with 13 points and was 3 of 7 from the line. Lewis Lindsey, William Rabot and Preston Ikehara-Yasay each scored 5 points.
The next set of boys basketball games will start at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kaua‘i High School gym when Kaua‘i will host Waimea High School.
