Kapa‘a 45, Kaua‘i 29 KAPA‘A — It was a good night for Destiny Smith and Mailika Napoleon. Both girls finished the night with 12 points, eight rebounds and one block each in Kapa‘a High School’s 45-29 win over Kaua‘i High School last night in Kapa‘a.
Kaua‘i (0-3) took an early, but slight lead in the first quarter with scores from Jennifer Albuja, Randee Layosa, Krystal Ijima and Janessa Grady to finish 9-7.
Midway through the second, Lehua McCabe ducked inside for a lay up that gave Kapa‘a the lead for the first time of the night. Napoleon and Leilani Laranio added scores, including a buzzer beater from Laranio, to carry that lead to 20-16 into the half.
In the third, Smith snagged a rebound and fed open teammate Sarah Tangalin to put the Warriors up by 10. Kaua‘i’s only pair of points in that quarter came from Tristen Rosare.
Later in the fourth, Smith came up with another pair to bring Kapa‘a’s lead to 20.
Kaua‘i enjoyed a late surge, outscoring Kapa‘a in the fourth 11 to 9. Kathleen Cadiente nearly stole show when she launched a near half court shot at the buzzer to sink a three-pointer.
In the earlier junior varsity matchup, Kapa‘a defeated Kaua‘i 54-33.
Kapa‘a had two players go into double digits. Justine Holt led the team with 18 and Kira Nakamura had 14.
For Kaua‘i, Christina Banach led the Raiders with 15 points. Kayla Perez finished with 10.
The Kapa‘a’s and Kaua‘i’s boys basketball teams take the court tonight in Kapa‘a with junior varsity’s tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
Kapa‘a’s girls (2-1) will travel to Waimea High School with the first game also starting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
