Intense defense dominated the field in the finals of the Winter Cup hosted by the Kaua‘i Mens Soccer League.
Anchored by Parker Blaylock and Eric Baxter, goalkeepers for Hanalei and Kryptonite, respectively, both teams ended regulation play in a 0-0 stalemate.
Aiding Blaylock for Hanalei, Ikaika Fuerte was composed through most of the game, relying on his leg to boom the ball out of danger. Valmiki Davis and Gustafo Ribeiro also backed the defensive stand.
Kaena Mayer, Daniel Minei and Tyson Wakayama provided the defensive frontline for Baxter in the Kryptonite camp.
Kryptonite, accompanied by strong banter from the stands, appeared to have control of the game, and at one point in the first half, penetrated the Hanalei defense as the ball zipped past Blaylock only to be called back.
That prompted Hanalei to adjust in the half, and the redshirts went on to outshoot Kryptonite 19-7 in shots, pushing the greenshirt defense to earn its keep.
With the 0-0 stalemate, the contest went straight to shootout where the first Hanalei kickers netted goals while Kryptonite was able to sink just two nets in four attempts.
Michael Chamberlain, playing a strong midfield front in regulation, and Eddie Adams netted the Kryptonite goals while Fuerte, Colby Ayonon, Crissy Marti and Eduard Arauji sank the Hanalei goals for the win.
