University of Hawai‘i head football coach Greg McMackin announced the hiring of former Kamehameha Schools and Washington standout Ikaika Malloe as the Warriors’ new defensive assistant. Malloe, who spent the past four years at Uinversity of Texas El Paso, will coach the defensive tackles.
Malloe joined the UTEP coaching staff in 2004. He served as defensive line and defensive tackles coach during his four seasons with the Miners. At UTEP, he tutored Zach West, who went on to sign a free-agent contract with the New England Patriots, Alex Obomese, a second-team all-Conference USA pick, and Chris Mineo, a two-time all-WAC selection.
Prior to UTEP, Malloe spent two years at Western Illinois, where he coached the defensive line and oversaw the strength and conditioning program in 2002 and was the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator the following year. In 2002, the Leathernecks captured the Gateway Conference championship.
His defensive line ranked second in the conference with 33 sacks that year. The Leathernecks also ranked second in the league in red zone defense and opponents’ third down conversions, and third in rushing defense (153.9 yards per game).
Malloe, 33, started his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Washington. As a student assistant in 1997, he worked with the inside and outside linebackers. From 1998-99, he was a defensive graduate assistant working with the defensive line and special teams. Malloe spent the last two years as program coordinator, where he was involved with recruiting evaluation and computer breakdown for defense and special teams.
Malloe is the fourth new assistant on McMackin’s staff joining Nick Rolovich (quarterbacks), Brian Smith (offensive line), and Dave Aranda (defensive ends).
