WAIMEA — The Lady Warriors handed the Lady Menehune its first loss of the season last night, defeating them 51-41 at the Clem Gomes gym.
With the win, Kapa‘a High School’s girls basketball team has earned the upper hand in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federtation’s Round 2.
The difference may have been in the rebounds. Kapa‘a out-rebounded Waimea 47-33.
Kapa‘a led throughout the game, going into the half with a 6-point lead. Waimea got as close as 3 points, but was unable to break down Kapa‘a’s momentum.
Kapa‘a’s biggest lead of the night came in the final quarter when the Warriors were able to jump ahead by 13.
Kapa‘a (2-0 Round 2, 4-2 overall) was led by Leilani Laranio who finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Both Mai‘lika Napoleon and Destiny Smith finished with double-doubles on the night. Napoleon finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and two steals. Smith finished with 10 points, 15 rebounds and a steal.
Kapa‘a’s Jondi Das finished with 4 points and 7 rebounds after laying out for part of the game due to an injury.
Lehua McCabe netted 6 points before fouling out late in the contest and 5 points from guard Sarah Tangalin accounted for the victory.
Offensively for Waimea (1-1, 5-1), Kierra Barba led the team with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Lorinne Lagoc-Agrade finished with 9 points and 4 rebounds.
Cheri Kua added 8 points with Sheana Mata and Aiko Grande each finished with 3 points. Pairs from Erin Connelly and Jayme Jacinto rounded out the Waimea scoring.

The junior varsity Lady Menehune handed the Lady Warriors its first loss of the season last night, 37-36.
Waimea’s Charlyn Ortiz was fouled as she was taking a shot at the final second of regulation. Being tied at 36-36 with no time left on the clock, Waimea needed only one shot for the win. Ortiz missed her first shot, but as her second floated through the basket, the Waimea bench erupted in celebration of its first victory over the previously undefeated Kapa‘a.
The game was tied four times during the night, all four coming in the fourth quarter as the JV Menehune battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit, 21-10.
Down 2 points at 32-30, Ortiz sunk a 3-pointer for Waimea’s first lead of the night.
Searra Kaohi led Waimea with 10 points including three third quarter 3-point bombs which helped Waimea erase its halftime deficit. She was followed by Robin Moura netting 7 points before leaving the game with an injury. Ortiz finished with 6.
For Kapa‘a, Justine Holt and Kira Nakamura finished with 11 points each.
Ashlyn Lee and Shalyn Tupou helped the effort with 5 points apiece.
The next set of girls basketball games will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when Kaua’i High School hosts Kapa‘a.
