Police are trying to determine who was behind a detonated homemade bomb found Jan. 4 at Kapa‘a Elementary School.
No one was injured in the explosion, which caused damage to part of the school’s library.
Several residents described a loud noise and called police dispatch around 11 p.m. Friday following the incident, many describing having heard a boom from the school, according to a county release.
When officers arrived on-scene, they discovered the home-made bomb that had exploded outside the sliding door of the school library. The detonation caused the door to buckle and the glass to crack like a spider web, said Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman.
Officers also found black, powdery residue on the sliding door and pieces of the explosive device scattered around the area.
Private security guards who were working at the school on Friday night were not in the vicinity of the library at the time of the incident, the release states.
Police Chief Darryl Perry said preliminary details indicate the bomb was an improvised device in part created by fireworks leftover from the holidays.
Kaua‘i police are asking for the public’s help in the case, requesting anyone with information call Detective Patrick Balbarino at 241-1684, police dispatch at 241-1711 or Crime Stoppers at 241-1887.
