Boy Scouts from Troop 105 and the Kapa‘a High School Music Department recently gave the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital a double dose of aloha.
The Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital will be celebrating its 91st anniversary this year. Founded by Emma Kauikeolani Napolean Mahelona Wilcox in 1917, the hospital began in memory of her son Samuel, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 28.
Ty States, Joshua Cram and Jonathan Paleka of Boy Scout Troop 105, built two picnic tables for Mahelona patients to have a more pleasant space during outdoor activities.
The green tables were dedicated by the boys to Dave Goller, the Mahelona Medical Center Charitable Foundation president, and Stanley Sagum, a member of hospital staff.
The Home Depot, following a presentation by the scouts, donated the building materials. With two day’s worth of sweat equity, the boys completed their community service project.
The Kapa‘a High School Music Department also made a donation to the hospital, and presented the foundation with $800, proceeds from their winter concert.
Those interested in helping Mahelona can do so through its hospital thrift shop sales as well as at the hospital’s annual Country Store, which is open to the public.
Located in the hospital, the thrift shop is open Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The store is staffed by volunteers from the auxiliary.
Proceeds from the shop also support long-term care resident activities and provide Christmas gifts for residents and patients annually.
