People have only a day left to take advantage of The Salvation Army celebration this week.
During the week-long celebration, customers at the Thrift Store in both Lihu‘e and Hanapepe were offering a 50 percent discount on purchases.
But beyond that discount, volunteers from the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church were also celebrating as they prepared their weekly meal offerings in the certified kitchen at the Salvation Army Lihu‘e Corps, yesterday.
As the aroma of lunch filled the spacious kitchen, Lolli Hagen, one of the church volunteers, said the Thursday lunch was being prepared on a new stove with range hood.
“Everything was dedicated last week,” Hagen said. “The stove and hood were donated by the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a in memory of one of its members, Richard Rentz, whose wife also volunteers here.”
Hagen said her crew of four have been using the new stainless steel commercial stove which features two ovens for the past several weeks, and it is definitely helping in preparing the weekly meal which feeds up to 130 lunches weekly.
“We’ve been pretty steady with the numbers going from about 90 to 130 every week,” Hagen said.
In addition to preparing lunch, the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church volunteers also prepare about 300 Mobile Munchies, or a lunch-to-go in a brown paper sack.
“These go everywhere from Kekaha to Kapa‘a,” said Susan Pittman, another of the volunteers.
Currently, the Mobile Munchies are dropped off at Hanapepe, Waimea, Kekaha, Lihu‘e, Hanama‘ulu and the Kapa‘a Boys & Girls Clubhouse, Pittman said.
“We hope to get out to Anahola by the end of summer since we’ve had some calls,” Pittman said.
In addition to the Thursday lunches, the Lihu‘e Corps continue to host its weekly Tuesday evening suppers.
Originally billed as part of The Salvation Army Week celebration, the dedication was pushed up a week, and on Thursday, the volunteer crew simply focused on getting lunch on the table.
In addition to the discount at the Thrift Shop, the Hanapepe Corps is hosting its first-ever Hobby Show at its social hall tomorrow.
This event is designed for collectors with emphasis on stamp and coin collectors, but open to all hobby enthusiasts.
