KEALIA — Kristyn Vasconcelles may have been too eager on the first go, but that didn’t stop her from earning All Around Champion Cowgirl honors, Sunday.
Vasconcelles, named Miss Hawai‘i Rodeo in 2007, finished with 36 points in the Kaua‘i All Girl Rodeo Association event at the Kealia Arena, Sunday, edging out Corinna Vasconcelles by six points. Corinna was named the Reserve All Around Cowgirl for the event.
Kristyn, riding Scamper in the 3D Barrels event, was near the bottom of the 20-rider field, but brought the audience to life as she took the lead on a 19.186 go. Prior to that ride, Britni Brun set the pace on a 19.444 go which was bested by Coralyn Murayama’s 19.454 go about a third of the way through the event.
Kristyn continued her top performance with another first finish, riding to a 23.695 go in the 3D Poles competition.
In the Steer Undecorating event, Kristyn jumped the barrier in her first go for a 10-second penalty, but was running in the money with a 1.912 run before the penalty.
More careful on her second go, Kristyn finished with a 2.33 run for a 13.479 average and fourth place.
She finished third in the Dally Team Roping on a 15.202/1 single go, teaming with Shantell Wong who was nursing her steed in need of shoeing.
Kristyn also finished second in the Breakaway Roping on a 17.298 run for her final run.
Corinna Vasconcelles finished with three top finishes, the first coming in the Steer Undecorating event where she was quick with a 5.833 average on two goes. Her first go stopped the clock at 2:529 followed by a second run at 3.304 for the average.
Teaming with Murayama, Corinna ended with an average of 30.669 for top honors in the Dally Team Roping before taking top honors in the Breakaway Roping on a 12.965 average. She also teamed with Taylor Ludington for a second finish in that event.
