Five members of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 950 recently received the Girl Scout Silver Award at a ceremony held on O‘ahu.
The troop is guided by volunteers Joni Craig as troop leader and Janice Chun as assistant troop leader. The girls are students at Waimea High School and Kaua‘i High School, where they participate in soccer, tennis, cheerleading, volleyball, choir and other school activities.
The award is the second highest achievement in Girl Scouts and is symbolic of a girl’s accomplishments scouting and within her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others.
While a Girl Scout works on her Silver Award project, she builds skills, explores careers, gains leadership skills and makes a commitment to self-improvement. In order to earn the award she must spend 15 hours in a leadership role and a minimum of 40 hours planning and executing her project. A girl who earns this award has demonstrated her willingness to take on significant responsibilities.
