I have a message for former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre: Stay retired.
Pick up golf.
Pick up gardening.
Pick up anything but your helmet and a football.
For the last four years, you’ve been dangling a “should I stay or should I go now” situation. To retire or not to retire?
It’s all very tiring if you ask me.
Yes, I know you’re a huge fan favorite.
Yes, I know you’re living legend for some.
Yes, I know you’re coming off one of the best seasons of your career.
And, yes, I know that Green Bay has a lot of young talent right now. But that doesn’t mean you should come back.
You’ve already had the tearful press conference and everyone said their goodbyes. The media has already aired its tributes to you.
Just end it there. It’s perfect timing.
Well, maybe not perfect because at least performance wise, you ended with a pick in the AFC Championship game. But it’s all good.
You’re a three-time MVP. You finished your career with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories.
But it’s over now. How much longer can you keep stringing your fans and team along? You think you’re going to retire, then you’re not. You think you’re going to retire, then you’re not.
Then you actually retire, but don’t file your retirement papers. You say it’s over, but then you turn up on the “The Late Show with David Letterman” and say that something’s “bound to happen.”
Just stop it already. You’ve had 17 years in the spotlight already. Dragging everyone along with you while you decided whether you want to play is just selfish.
Do you think the world needs to wait to hear from you? Do you need the attention that bad?
The Packers organization has since said that its first-round draft pick Aaron Rodgers is their guy. They’re sticking to him.
They’ve accepted departure. They’ve already cut that cord. Just move on to something else.
I think I would scrap playing for another team, too. Just think how bad it would be if, for some reason, you did come back on another team and that idea tanks.
It’s better to just leave it alone.
You said before, saying you just don’t think you could do it anymore.
If the Packers do take you back and the season is disappointing again, you would say to yourself, “Man, I should have stayed retired.”
And you don’t want that right?
Ride into the sunset.
Grow that beard. Put holes in those Wrangler jeans and get some dirt on those white T-shirts of yours.
And to Aaron Rodgers, hang in there. The Packers seem to be backing you. They’ve backed you all summer and have drafted your back-up QB in Brian Brohm.
Just don’t let them down. Keep your head up and get ready for the upcoming season.
And if they do take Favre back, you’ve only got one more year on that contract, right?
