“OZone,” an Olson 30, finished Thursday’s race hosted by the Nawiliwili Yacht Club in second place on a 51:33 elapsed sail over “Lelele” (50:55) in the three-lap race which measured out to 4.4 miles in 10-15 knot winds out of the east-northeast.
“Carole was on the helm for ‘Lelele’ tonight and did a magnificent job,” said NYC scorekeeper Sharon Gibson. “They took an early lead and then defended it for the entire race.”
Gibson, who piloted “Malihini” to a first-finish in the opening race of the series, suffered damage to the catamaran’s mainsail in Race No. 2, and despite getting the sail repaired, had to sit out the race due to problems with the boat’s outboard.
Following the Thursday race which was whittled down to just five boats, “OZone” topped the series with 4 overall PHRF points to “Lelele’s” 7 points for first place.
The strong showing through three races also gave “OZone” top billing in the PHRF Monohull (4 points) and Club Open classes (6 points) with “Lelele” a solid second place in all three classes.
Following the top two finishers in Thursday’s race, “Speedy,” another Olson 30, crossed third (55:29 elapsed, 55:34 PHRF) followed by “Bonjolea,” an X-342, (1:00.25 elapsed, 58:06 PHRF) and “Papa‘au,” an Express 27 (1:01.31 elapsed, 58:53 PHRF).
Harbor racing takes a break as the NYC Race Committee readies for its big Kaua‘i Channel Race coming up Aug. 8.
According to a press release from Maryann Holden, the field of about 15 boats will leave Ko‘Olina Marina in the early morning hours and the first finishers of the 78-mile race expected to reach the entrance to Nawiliwili Harbor some time mid-afternoon.
Holden said each arriving boat must have a “greeter,” and if anyone is interested in showing aloha to one, or more of the boats, they should call Gibson at 742-2515.
Additionally, NYC will be hosting a Saturday night awards party catered by Brennecke’s at the NYC Clubhouse.
Tickets for the gathering featuring prime rib of beef and Pacific Sound Machine providing dance music are on sale for $50.
