Ikaika Basketball from Kaimuki and the Wahine Tigers from Kona are two teams who will take the floor starting tonight at the 5th Annual Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association Girls 15 and Under tournament.
Karen Matsumoto, KYBA coordinator, said originally there were supposed to be four teams visiting, but due to rising airfares and the lack of time to fundraise for the difference, this year’s tournament will have only two visiting teams.
Kaua‘i teams participating in the tournament include Kaulupono Girls under coach Bobby Kamakele and Pedro Saligumba, the Kamikaze with coach Kevin Hanano and the Gee’s Angels with coach Cecil Gee.
Today’s games start at 5:30 p.m. with Kaulupono going up against the Kamikaze.
That contest will be followed by the Gee’s Angels hosting Ikaika Basketball at 6:30 p.m. The final game will see the Wahine Tigers go up against the Kamikaze starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Matsumoto said tomorrow’s schedule will start at 9:30 a.m. with all games being completed before the opening of the Kaua‘i Hospice “Concert in the Sky,” an event that the visiting teams had expressed an interest in attending.
The tournament concludes Saturday.
Because of the modified team scheduling, the tournament winner will be determined by the win-loss record. In the event of a tie, the sequenced methods for tie breaking will include head-to-head, defensive point system and offensive point system.
There is no charge to view the three-day competition.
