PO‘IPU — Water safety officers at the Po‘ipu Beach tower were surprised, Tuesday morning.
They arrived to find dead juvenile crabs littering the beach at the high-water line of the popular beach park.
“There must be hundreds, if not thousands,” said Roy Yamagata, one of the veteran water safety officers. “They’re all over the beach park and there are dead ones all the way to the beach fronting the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort.”
Yamagata said that Myles Emura, another of the water safety officers, took a walk along to beach to assess the situation and reported the dead crabs up to the beach fronting the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort.
“We don’t know why this happened but we have a call in to state biologist Don Heacock,” Yamagata said.
The beach was not closed following the discovery, and trips to Shipwreck’s Beach to the east turned up no dead crabs. To the west, the beach fronting the Beach House Restaurant just past the Prince Kuhio Park revealed just a sprinkling of dead crabs at the high water mark.
Yamagata also checked with the Salt Pond tower who reported no dead crabs at its beach.
