KIUC releases $50,000 for
electric bill assistance
The Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative Charitable Foundation has released $50,000 to Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity to help qualified low-income electricity users with their electric bills.
In 2005, Gov. Linda Lingle signed legislation enabling KIUC to keep and use for charitable purposes unclaimed refunds, or patronage capital checks, that would have previously been turned over to the state.
Interested Kaua‘i residents can call KEO at 245-4077 ext. 240 to see if they qualify for the program or to apply beginning Sept. 2.
Koloa Landing going up
Vertical construction is underway at Koloa Landing in Po‘ipu, following approval of phase-one building permits.
Koloa Landing is a 25-acre luxury residential resort development located on the South Shore. Prices range from $900,000 to $2 million.
“We’re very excited after months of site preparation to be going vertical with buildings,” said Todd Hadley, owners representative for the Koloa Landing developer, Po‘ipu Beach Villas LLC.
Sales of the S&P Destination Properties two-, three- and four-bedroom luxury condominium homes began last October. The first residences are scheduled for occupancy in the fourth quarter of 2009.
700 attend tourism conference
More than 700 attended this year’s Hawai‘i Annual Tourism Conference, held Aug. 7 to 8.
Rex Johnson, HTA president and CEO, said the strong attendance is a “positive indication of the unity among the travel industry during these challenging economic times.”
Local and national industry experts discussed visitor statistics, tourism products, public relations, preparing for Korean and Chinese visitors, airline industry updates, meetings market trends and managing Hawai‘i online. On the second day of the conference, HTA’s marketing partners — Hawai‘i Visitors and Convention Bureau, Hawai‘i Tourism Japan, Hawai‘i Tourism Asia, Hawai‘i Tourism Europe, Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania and SMG — unveiled their 2009 marketing plans. HTA checks out Kaua‘i
cultural programs in progress
On Kaua‘i, members of HTA’s Natural Resources Advisory Group conducted a site inspection July 25 on the South Shore. HTA has supported a numbers of efforts to improve two trails in the area, including the development, repair and maintenance of trail markers, and development and production of trail maps and Web pages (www.poipubeach.org and www.hikemahaulepu.org).
The group then met with Westside organizations on their efforts to improve Koke‘e Park and surrounding areas. Volunteers have assisted with alien species removal, replanting of native plants, clearing of trails, improving the safety and appearance of the park, trails, and facilities, and providing educational programs for visiting students.
Kaua‘i Developer’s Council
to meet Wednesday
The Kaua‘i Developer’s Council will host a general membership meeting from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Steve Busch, vice president of development management for Marriott Vacation Club’s Hawai‘i Region, will give the keynote address on the developments at Kaua‘i Lagoons.
The nonprofit council promotes high ethics and community responsibility in development-related trades and professions through education, and cooperates with legislative bodies and government agencies with the goal of seeking policies which will be beneficial to Kaua‘i.
The 70-member group consists mostly of large Kaua‘i landowners, contractors, real estate mortgage lenders, brokers and is a sister organization of the Hawai‘i Developers Council.

Garden Island Inn to
celebrate 20th anniversary
