Preseason football wraps up today and tomorrow and for some unsigned rookies, like Kapa‘a’s Brennen Carvalho and University of Hawai‘i alum Davone Bess, these final games might be their last chance to make the active rosters.
Carvalho is currently listed as the fourth-string center for the Green Bay Packers who play their final preseason game today against the Tennessee Titans at Lambeau Field.
At the Packers’ last press conference before today’s game, head coach Mike McCarthy said rookies they have the ability to progress if they want to make the team.
“I think it’s just important for all the younger players, particularly the rookies, to continue to progress,” he said. “I think you’ve seen that from a number of them. I think it’s only natural. I think it’s really a direct correlation to our football team, being a young football team, we need to continue to improve. So I just want to see the rookie class take another step forward in productivity and adjust the comfort as far as using the techniques and doing things the way they’ve been coached to do it.”
The Miami Herald reported yesterday that Bess, who has been training with the Miami Dolphins, is a near lock at receiver and even writes that a “Dolphins official said the staff sees Wes Welker-type potential in Bess.”
Former Warrior Reagan Mauia, in his second year with the Dolphins, is said to be “on the bubble,” listed behind Boomer Grigsby at fullback.
Last week, former Warrior receiver Ryan Grice-Mullins was waived by the Chicago Bears. Other rookies with Hawai‘i ties that should see play action this weekend are Waimea High School graduate Jordon Dizon (Lions) and record-setting Warrior quarterback Colt Brennan (Redskins).
Both Dizon and Brennan signed four-year deals earlier in the summer.
