David Fink fired a five under par score of 66 to take a two shot lead over defending champion Alex Ching, yesterday, in Round 1 in the O‘ahu Country Club Men’s Invitational. It was “Home Cookin” as four of the six rounds that were shot under par were shot by OCC members — Fink 66, Ching 68, Jeff Weinstein 70 and Gary Kong 70. Travis Toyama, the two-time Manoa Cup champion, fired a 69 while Kaua‘i’s T.J. Kua fired a one under par 70. Fink’s round featured seven birdies and just two bogies.
Kua’s father Stan Kua, also playing in the Open division, shot 83. Fellow Kaua‘i golfer and 2006 Manoa Cup champ Jonathan Ota shot 76.
Gary Kong fired a 1-under 70 to take a four-shot lead over Fred Morinaka in the Senior division. Kong recently turned 55 and is a “Senior Rookie.” Defending champion George Yamamoto struggled to a 79.
The field will be cut to the low 30 players ties after tomorrow (36-holes). The Senior Flight will be contested over the first 36-holes.
