KANE‘OHE — Chelsea Smith-Wishard returned to her home state over the weekend to lead the Pepperdine cross country team with a third-place finish at the University of Hawai‘i Big Wave Invitational. The 2007 Kaua‘i High School graduate Smith-Wishard completed the scenic 4K run in 14:43.18.
Smith-Wishard finished just four seconds behind UCLA runner-up Shannon Murakami (14:39.89) and six seconds off the winning pace set by Bruin freshman Katja Goldring (14:37.50). UCLA won the women’s team title with 26 points as it placed five of its runners in the top 10. San Diego State took second (63) with two Top 10 finishers followed by Pepperdine (71), Brigham Young-Hawai‘i (117), Hawai‘i Pacific (118), UH (167), Hawai‘i-Hilo (172), and Chaminade (250).
Smith-Wishard was a two-time prep champion in the 1,500 while at Kaua‘i and is now in her second year running for Pepperdine.
